Roster of Known Survivors

cropped-20120629205740_043.jpg

We are but a few of the Survivors of the 1977-1980 Enewetak Atoll Atomic Debris Cleanup Mission in the Marshall Islands.

Our main focus is to help each other with information and moral support during challenging times.

Our secondary focus is to urge Congress to change the current laws and recognize soldiers of the atomic cleanup mission as “veterans who participated in radiation-risk activities during active service.”

Many of the soldiers and civilians and government personnel who participated in the 1977 – 1980 Enewetak Atoll Atomic Cleanup Mission never saw each other after they returned to their ordinary lives after playing their part to make Enewetak Atoll somewhat safer to live upon.

Some of us have kept in touch. Some have lost touch. Some have died. Some of us have reconnected on various websites and social networks such as Facebook.

Our group at Facebook has grown to over 400 members and over half of us were atomic cleanup participants. The cleanup mission involved about 8,000 participants. We have not found everyone and are continuing to look for more participants to sign our roster.

367 Atomic Cleanup Veterans have signed our 1977-1980 Enewetak Atoll Atomic Cleanup Mission Participant Roster as of 4/23/2016. Please help us find more survivors.

  1. Thomas Summers… HHC and C Company of the 65Th Combat Engineers. 79-81.

  2. Aloha guys, need a 911 to locate Air Force buddy from LOJWA BASE CAMP!His name is Matthew Arnald…Any one remember red headed Matt, worked in Air Force trailer, his job was to read and log information on our Radiation badges ,very important to locate him…Mahalo guys,

  3. After reading eveyones post and seeing the medical issues many of you have, I’m thankful I was’nt sent to Johnson Island like many of us when we came down on levy. Uncle Sam sent me to Germany 1978-79. Best wishes to all our Vets that served there.

  4. I wish you guys the best in getting help. I was a civilian contractor involved in the core drilling on Enewetak in 1973-74. I’m amazed you didn’t have masks moving radioactive dust. Even we got that much in hot areas, like the Cactus Crater rim. Good luck!

    • I’m having a bad time with low white cell count and low red count with 7 blood clots and my hair is falling out. Does anyone have the same problem? It has been going on from 1976/1977. White Sands Missle Range and down range inspections of target sites. U.S. Army no help from Vet Affairs nor VA Hospital. Don’t think they… no jack… about what’s happening to me. I have just found you guys. Need some help if you guys got it.

      • I’m not sure about getting VA assistance for activites at White Sands Missle Range. Our group of Enewetak Atoll Atomic Cleanup Veterans can currently apply for VA Health Assistance by submitting a claim for “occupational exposure to ionizing radiation” but not for “at-risk exposure” to radiation. I suggest you check with your local VA Center and find out if you can file a claim as having occupational exposure to radiation. In an effort to change our group’s status to “at-risk” exposure, we are encouraging everyone we know to ask their federal representative to co-sponsor Congressman Mark Takai’s “H.R. 3870: Atomic Veterans Healthcare Parity Act.” It has already been referred to the Committee on Veterans’ Affairs. Here is the link to the bill: https://www.govtrack.us/congress/bills/114/hr3870/text/ih

      • White Sands Missile Range was designated as a U.S. Superfund Cleanup Site. I was there in 1976 working with radar units and repairs to Vulcan Anti-Aircraft Weapons Systems. I have had Blood clots also, but the VA has turned me down. I put in a claim and they denied it. Twice this happened and I lost. I appealed and won in trial. Check on the VA website or speak with a VSO and find out what you may be eligible for.

  5. Hey Phillip, Yep it was 12-27-1977 when we got to Guam…I looked at my custodial receipt from the exchange it was dated same,,,for $20,406.30,,.and the typhoons name was Mary…than Rita in 10-19-1978, this one I stayed on Lojwa for my birthday…fun…than Alice was 1-05-1979. what a trip all three typhoons….life what a blast it’s been for me….Aloha Ken

  6. Hey guys, P.X.Mgr.Lojwa, wondering if you were evacuated from Lojwa, Sept 1977, to Guam. I haven’t heard anyone’s story?? We were evacuated from Lojwa to Enewetak, then crammed into a.c… flew to Guam for safety… we where allowed one small item on a.c… I had to carry Lojwa P.X. funds for safety in a brief case… I was also there for the other two typhoons…Alice, Rita, Mary? This was the first, we where evacuated, second they left us on Lojwa…(Black and white video on youtube… Ken Kasik…with sounds from px concert..) third we were evacuated to Enewetak… but I stayed on Lojwa as storm hit Oct 19th… my birthday was next day.. I had a great day… humm. Aloha guys – Ken Kasik

    • Ken, I got there in October 77 and we got evact. New Year’s Eve to Guam, you went with us I thought.

      • Sure did, dates are little off but it was a trip… Guam treated us like we were contaminated.. And called us animals…and told U.S. Not to bring us back??? That’s why next storms we where left on the islands…The government’s cost were too high to evacuate us again… everything was to save money, stay on Time..Aloha,Ken

        • Kenny, Hence the name “Animals”. Right? Kenny can you elaborate on how you all became known as “Animals”? I know for a fact that you know the correct answer. Let everyone know. Hehehe

    • Hey Kenny, I worked for you at the PX. I was the Ops NCO for Cpt Apo and was on the last chopper out of Lojwa for the first evacuation. Shakka Brudda!

  7. I was on Lojwa from about 10/77 to 4/78, Heavy Equipment Mechanic, 62B20.
WO3 Chief Billy Wilkerson was Motor Officer. Its been years since I’ve been through all my Enewetak stuff, I have a lot of pictures, I’ll post some later.

Some names I don’t see from my time there. Al Fernandez, (I know Al lives in Maui), Ernie Valarria (Hawaii) Otha Lee Coley (Virginia) David Brown (Chicago)
    David Scott (Pennsylvania).

  8. I’m Ian Jackson. I was an equipment operator stationed on Enewetak Island. I think it was C Company. Been a while now – ’78-’79. We lived at the airport with the MAC guys.

I’d like to add a couple guys on here that I don’t see on the roster.

SSG Patrick Akuna. I think he was there in ’78. He was my platoon Sgt 65th Combat Engineers at Schofield barracks in Hawaii. Last saw him in Hawaii on vacation with my wife around 1990. Hell of a good NCO.

SP4 -David A. Thomas from Virginia. He was also in the equipment platoon with me on Enewetak at the same time (’78-’79). We were together in 65th Combat Engineers. Last saw him at his home in Virginia in 1980.

  9. I will have to look for the exact dates I was on Lojwa, but I believe it was 1/78-7/78. Cpt. Doug Ho (sp?) was B Company CO and I was XO and operations officer. I was sent to Enewetok as the Asst. S-3 but switched with a newby coming in and took his place. We were doing the demo of the structures and pillboxes and the imps were doing their thing on Enjebi and elsewhere. I have a ton of slides to get digitized and will share with you. Just for kicks I had some “Lojwa Animal” t-shirts (remember them?) made up for a softball team. I still have the screenprint if you’re interested.

  10. I have a vet who was exposed to radiation and the only place he could have gotten his exposure is off the USS Magoffin which was a participant in the testing at the Atoll. Does anyone have any information about the blast named OAK? I need it to help his wife win a Bladder Cancer claim.

    • Sorry to hear of the health challenges of another Atomic Test Participant. Our group of Atomic Cleanup Veterans returned to Enewetak Atoll in 1977 to clean up debris and fallout from 44 atomic bombs tested during the Cold War Atomic Test Era. We posted an article listing several websites and internet groups dedicated to reconnect veterans and supporters from the Atomic Test and Atomic Cleanup Missions at http://goo.gl/dTMvgC . I suggest you contact The National Association of Atomic Veterans and ask them to assist you with advice and resources. They are a great group of people and are much more knowledgeable about the Test Era than our group of Atomic Cleanup Veterans.

  11. I have some photo that I took while I was stationed at Enewetak. I would like to post them if I can. If so, how and where?

  12. I’m Gerald Doiron & I served two tours on lojawa running Cowboy’s fix It Truck 10/24/78 -3/7/79 & 7/10/79-12/12/79 as a 62b heavy equipment mechanic. I would appreciate any news of Andrew ‘Country’ Owens. I believe he came from Virginia

  13. Ash here. I have been reading many comments sent out. I did my tour on LOJWA from Feb to July of 1978. I am not sure what is wrong with me. I am experiencing many changes in my health. All of them are isolated to only me in my family. I was a construction surveyor. I worked on many islands there. Who can I talk to that will help me?

    • Over 300 Enewetak Atoll Atomic Debris Cleanup Veterans are in a Facebook group at https://www.facebook.com/groups/120395714769077/ Samuel Ash. Feel free to visit and ask to join our group. At the current time, participants of the Enewetak Atoll Mission are listed as having “occupational” exposure to radiation at Enewetak. We are trying to get Congress to change our classification to “at-risk” exposure per Hawaii’s Rep. Mark Takai’s HR3870 “Atomic Veterans Healthcare Parity Act.” Please ask your federal representative(s) to co-sponsor and support http://bit.ly/HR3870Takai

  14. I am a LOWJA ANIMAL. I will always be just that. My name is Ash Samuel B I am retired from 26 years of regular and reserve Army duty. my e-mail address is ashsam18@yahoo.com Jim Androl can confirm my identity. Please contact me. Keep me updated. Thanx. It will be great to hear from other vets.

  15. I was there June 1977 to September 1977 as an Electrician at Enewetak and Lojwa. Was TDY from 864th Engineers, Fort Lewis, Washington State.

  16. Bob Everhart: I was stationed on Enewetak from May to October 1979 was based on Lojwa and worked on Runit as a welder with Co. A, 84th Engrs. Just found the web site a week ago, did not know about the web site until I started looking up info on Enewetak.

I remember not being given a choice, I was told I was going whether I liked or not. Over the past 20 -25 years have had several health problems, the latest have been sleep apnea and lost most of my vision in right eye. Doctors not sure what caused the lost of vision, but think my time on Enewetak could be a possibility. Never tried VA , heard getting anything out of VA was next to impossible.

  17. Did not participate in the clean-up, but was on Eniwetok island with the 57TH Weather Recon Squadron during the bomb testing. Have a nice 8X10 color photo of an underwater shot that caused waves to flood across mid island where our tents were located. Spent 5 months and 8 days on the island. Have vivid memories of the shots lighting up the early skies and the shock waves that followed.

  19. Hi……..
I am one of the ATOMIC VETS who was at the BRAVO test in March 1954. I have a shadow on the plerus of my left lung. When I had a specialist go in and take a look at it he told me that they looked at it but couldn’t identify what it was. This is a so called lung cancer SPECIALIST.
While we watched the snow coming down, after the test we all joked about snow in 90+ degree heat ha ha ha. It wasn’t until much later that we discovered that the stuff we had ingested into our respiratory systems was really CS137 (Cesium) a by product of NUCLEAR FISSION. Several years ago a research team visited the lagoon where the BRAVO shot was detonated, and they found that the floor of the lagoon is STILL quite HOT with CESIUM. CS137 has a half life of over 30 years. In addition many of the natives of a nearby island had to be PERMANENTLY RELOCATED, and the US Government and taxpayers are still paying for the healthcare of those who suffered radiation injuries.
The test was technically flawed but nobody knew this until AFTER THE FACT, and over 7000 sq miles of the Marshall Islands was contaminated. I was a Navy enlisted person, and was then serving aboard USS Belle Grove LSD 2. Our function was to provide a BOAT POOL.(LCVP,and LCM). On the day of the test of the alleged 7 megaton device we was on station about 40 miles southeast of Eniwetok (which was considered to be far enough for a 7 MEG shot). Unfortunately some changes which were made in the refinement of the primary material was NOT PASSED on and the 7 MEGATON SHOT ended up being a 15 meg shot, and as such a number of the task force vessels were not far enough away, and ended up receiving heavy doses of CS137 FALLOUT. CVE 105 received a severe plastering on her flight deck, and many of the crew worked to scrub it down WITHOUT ANY PROTECTIVE GEAR WHATSOEVER, and a few subsequently died early and suffered rather painful deaths.(Those who passed early were in their 50s). I have done a lot of research into the ionizing radiation question, and learned from Johns Hopkins that even low dose radiation has the potential to FRACTURE the DNA strand. When this happens it can no longer produce exact copies of cells, and leads to cancers, and other ailments which includes nerve cell destruction. My arms, back and shoulders are covered with white dead nerve striations. VA here in Fort Wayne tells me that they are not equipped to deal with NUCLEAR RADIATION ISSUES… so that is where it all ended…. I live from day to day,and have largely GIVEN UP trying to learn why I have the lung shadow. Hope all you guys have better luck. Where VA is concerned it appears that you will need all the luck you can find.

  20. I was a McClellan AFB Lab tech, and I recall doing Eniwetok ‘cleanup progress’ samples well before ’77 (I got out in ’75)

    • Radiation surveys of the islands were performed in 1972 and in 1977. The 1977-1980 Mission was the portion of the cleanup performed by the military joint task group that directed our mission. Prior to 1977, most of the work was performed by government contractors.

  21. I would like to catch up with Andrew Owens, nickname Country, who was with me during my first tour, Oct 78 to Mar 79.

    • Do Rion watch out for country, got me in trouble for driving the boat ! Reo.

  22. Just signed up yesterday. How long before my name will appear with my brothers on this page? I found this by accident and am totally thrilled to see this page. How do I post pictures? I have lots of pictures from when I was on Lojwa I have a pic of me standing in front of what was the motor pool after the hurricane.

      • Just found this through suggestion from DVA rep in Tn. & added myself to the roster. I was on Lojwa in the Hut to the far east corner with the coral wall & coral BBQ I made with another Animal. This corner was a popular party place on the island, the hut next door had the enclosed wooden bar. I ran the Diesel Pneumatic & I helped rebuild the 20 ton dump repair shack when Alice tore it down.
