Island Lived on at Enewetak Atoll: Lojwa

Islands Worked on at Enewetak Atoll:  Enewetak and Lojwa

Description of Work Performed:  I lived on both islands. On Lojwa, I was a truck driver where I hauled the contaminated dirt with a 20 Ton Dump Truck that is now on the bottom of the ocean. The reason it is on the bottom of the ocean is that it was not safe due to radiation. On Enewetak, I was a medic. Basically if something happened to anyone on the island of Lojwa we would take a helicopter to escort them to medical on Enewetak. We would also assist the natives of Lojwa as well as the military. I want to emphasize that all equipment was sunk. The only thing that left the islands was us.

Health Challenges which may be related to Radiation Exposure:  Yes

Comments about Health Challenges: Stomach Cancer, and polyps in my colon.

Veterans Administration Health Assistance: Pending assistance

Experiences with the Veterans Administration: I am attempting to get help with the VA. I am filing a disability compensation claim, but it is pending at this time. I am also applying for VA Health Care.

EAACV Missions:

Enewetak Atoll Atomic Cleanup Veterans’ main focus is to help each other with information and moral support during challenging times.

Our secondary focus is to urge Congress to change the current laws and recognize soldiers of the atomic cleanup mission as “veterans who participated in radiation-risk activities during active service.”
