Lojwa Base Camp – Home During Our Mission

Lojwa Base Camp was home to the primary military task group during our 1977 – 1980 Enewetak Atoll Atomic Cleanup Mission.

Lojwa Island was the 19th most radioactive island at Enewetak Atoll in the Marshall Islands.

No atomic bombs were tested on Lojwa Island but it received radioactive fallout from 12 atomic bomb test events.

The aggregate rock used to construct concrete slabs for the housing on Lojwa was blasted from the coral rock on Pearl Island. Pearl Island ranks as the 6th most radioactive island at Enewetak Atoll.

Military, Civilian and Government Personnel slept and worked in buildings that continuously emitted radiation from the soils and concrete slabs.
